Claude was born in Minnesota and moved with his family to Wisconsin and then South Dakota. After leaving his family, it is said that he had been a driver in Sioux City, Iowa and a boxer in his early years before coming to Nebraska.

He was a mechanic and chauffeur for the prominent Hamilton family of Omaha. This is where he met his wife, Caroline Jipp Melvin. She did some babysitting for the family. Their only daughter, Caroline, remembers hearing the story that her Mother, also known as La La, was taking a walk with a friend near the Hamilton's one day. Claude was washing the Hamilton car and squirted her with the hose. She didn't think it was humorous and would not go out with him for some period.

Claude was sickly during most of the marriage. It is thought that he had stomach problems due to his boxing days. Caroline worked outside the home for many years to sustain the family's needs. Claude enjoyed fishing whenever possible.

Claude's death certificate indicated he died of bronchiopneumonia and pulmonary edema. He had an electrolyte imbalance and acute gastric dilatation. He was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska.

Caroline was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. Caroline's Mother died from burns she received by lighting her kitchen gasoline stove one morning. Young Caroline, also known as La La, was only about twelve at the time and ended up caring for her younger brother and father. She therefore had just eight years of schooling.

She had several jobs during her lifetime. She baby sat for a wealthy family, the Hamilton's in Omaha, Nebraska, where she met her husband, Claude, as he was their chauffeur. Since Claude was ill most of the marriage, she helped the family make ends meet by taking on many different jobs over her lifetime.

She spent her last few years in Phoenix, Arizona where her only daughter, Caroline, lived and after her death was buried next to her husband in Omaha, Nebraska at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Her death record indicates that she had breast cancer for two years and developed pneumonia her last days which resulted in acute respiratory failure.
